Wildcard (week 26):
Beach Bunny – Vertigo

Since the departure of lead guitarist Matt Henkels in 2022, Beach Bunny are a trio. Front woman Lili Trifilio is surrounded by Anthony Vaccaro, who swapped his bass for the guitar, and drummer Jon Alvarado. 2022 was also the year the band released their latest album Emotional Creature. But now, they’re back!

Vertigo is Beach Bunny’s first single in two years’ time. With its blend of pop, punk, and indie music, the upbeat tune that is as catchy as it’s bouncy. The tight rhythm section underpins a commanding vocal line from Trifilio. She described the single as β€˜a bop about self sabotage, jealousy, and generally spiralling (classic)’.

Trifilio came up with the melody of the song on a flight, she says. β€œI wrote this on an aeroplane in my head and tried to demo it in the bathroom very sneakily. But aeroplane bathrooms are super loud, so as to not forget how it went, since the audio was trash, I sang it in my head for the entire duration of a 4-hour flight.”

Vertigo by Beach Bunny is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This implies that it will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.
