Wildcard (week 26):
Disco Mary – Proof
BBC 6 Music’s Steve Lamarq called Disco Mary ‘an indie supergroup’. And, well… why not? Based in Glasgow, the band was formed by Charlot Henzen (originally from Amsterdam, who also releases solo music as charly haze), Kev Sherry (lead singer of cult Scottish indie rockers Attic Lights) and Chris McCrory (singer, songwriter and producer for Scottish indie bands Catholic Action and Slow Weather).
Their smart, savvy and swinging pop blends soul music, indie rock, electro-pop, funky basslines and big beats. Inspirations include The Avalanches, Sault, Superorganism and Gorillaz.
New single Proof is a track that’s been sitting in the band’s vault for some time. But now, they’ve finished it for a proper release. Thank heavens, for it’s a funky, Madchester kind of affair that would sound great on radio. Lyrically, according to the band, it’s ‘a song to remind us all that we have a life beyond our phones, so get out there and live it’.
If you need proof that Disco Mary has the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard, just look at the blog. You’ll see they will be prominently displayed for an entire week.
