Wildcard (week 3):
Marble Sounds – Not All Is In Vain
Marble Sounds’ latest, self-titled album was drenched in strings and pianos. This richly orchestrated approach proved to be a big success. But instead of trying to copy this sound, main man Pieter Van Dessel decided to walk a different path. On his next album Core Memory (released on 7 March) synths and drums will be more prominent, making for a bolder and more electronic pure pop sound. It hints at his musical memories, especially from the ‘80s. As always, Van Dessel produced the album himself.
New single Not All Is In Vain is one of the album’s key tracks. A ‘keys’ track as well, with its full-blown synth sound. It isn’t hard to imagine Giorgio Moroder being a huge influence here. It’s a sparkling and epic song with a driving beat and catchy vocal melodies. In the fully instrumental second half, there’s room for a dirty synth solo and a euphoric outro.
Despite its uplifting sound, the lyrics are more cynical and – alas – contemporary. They describe how we’re continuing to do things the way we’re used to, while inevitably steering towards the apocalypse.
Not All Is In Vain by Marble Sounds is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. It will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.
