Wildcard (week 36):
G Flip – Bed On Fire
Georgia Claire Flipo is an Australian singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer. Originally from Melbourne, they now have their own studio in Los Angeles. Today, only a few weeks ahead of their 32nd birthday, G Flip released their third album Dream Ride. It finds the musical polymath playing every instrument and teaming back up with co-writer/producer Aidan Hogg. Together, they created an album that both unpacks their experience and is unabashedly inspired by Bruce Springsteen, late-night drives around LA, ‘80s reverb, and maximalist drums.
G Flip says about the album: “This album is inspired by the ‘80s. I’ve always resonated with ‘80s music, it embodies so much musicality – larger-than-life theatrics, bright colours, epic solos, huge drum tones, and a sonic landscape that feels like a movie. I wanted to embody all of this on this record and create my own ‘80s world. I wanted to make songs that make you dance, sing, cry, laugh, and enjoy on a long drive.”
The ten tracks that made the album were chosen from over 100 songs they recorded. The new single Bed On Fire sounds exactly like the description above and features a fab vocal performance. Although the title brings fellow Aussies Midnight Oil’s break-out single Beds Are Burning to mind, it deals with a totally different theme.
About Bed On Fire G Flip explains: “This song is all about the angst I grew up feeling going to Catholic school, having my first experience with a woman, and being like, ‘I’m bloody high off this love I’m having for someone that I shouldn’t.’ It’s saying, ‘Well, if I’m going to hell anyway, I’m going to set this place or the bed ablaze with my queerness’.”
Bed On Fire by G Flip is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. It will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.
