Wildcard (week 48):
The Haunted Youth – In My Head
The Haunted Youth, the band of 30-year-old multi-instrumentalist Joachim Liebens, is one of the biggest Belgian indie rock sensations of the last few years. After the release of the critically acclaimed debut album Dawn Of The Freak, they’ve been touring almost non-stop. Meanwhile, they’re currently writing and recording new songs, some of which are on the setlist already.
One of those songs is the monumental indie anthem In My Head. With a title like that, you won’t be surprised it’s sticky as a vanilla fudge. It’s got sweet tones as well, especially the Take On Me-like drums, melancholic synths and Liebens’ velvet-y voice. But lyrically, things are rather more dark. The song is about being confronted with one’s own worst enemies in love, relationships with friends and life as a whole.
In My Head is The Haunted Youth’s compelling new single. It opens with dreamy guitars, but ends in a wall of sound. The hypnotic repetition of ‘It’s in my head’, combined with hopeless cries, is sure to give you goose bumps.
Following earlier single Into You, this is the second teaser of the band’s upcoming sophomore album. We’ll have to be patient though, for it’s only scheduled for release in September 2025.
In My Head by The Haunted Youth is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. It will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week, to make sure it won’t go out of your head anymore.
